South LA Wetland Park Project

The South LA Wetland Park Project is a 9-acre constructed wetland park located in an urban area that includes storm water pre-treatment best management practice (BMP) measures, a storm water treatment wetland, and public park open space. The purpose of the Project is to improve storm water quality and downstream receiving water quality as well as provide valuable public green space in a heavily urbanized area of south Los Angeles. EcoKai provided expertise related to the design and establishment of the Project’s wetland habitat component. EcoKai staff members were involved in all stages of the Project from the Preliminary Design Report to providing input for habitat design planning and completing the installation and establishment of the wetland habitat. EcoKai’s primary tasks included designing native plant palettes, preparing detailed planting plans, coordinating with plant nurseries, providing oversight of location, spacing, and installation of wetland plants, conducting plant condition assessments, evaluating irrigation procedures, preparing plant photo identification logs, and reviewing contractor implementation of Project design specifications. EcoKai also provided a habitat operation and maintenance plan and training to the City’s park staff. Today the Wetland Park is a vibrant, flourishing habitat and park providing water quality improvement as well as natural habitat and aesthetic space for the public to enjoy.
