The Freshwater Marsh is a 51-acre wetland system constructed to provide treatment of stormwater and as compensatory mitigation for the neighboring Playa Vista residential development. The Marsh is located adjacent to the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve along the coast near Playa del Rey in Los Angeles County. EcoKai is currently contracted with the non-profit Ballona Wetlands Conservancy to provide management services, hydrological monitoring, and water quality and soil sampling for this ecological system. EcoKai maintains water monitoring equipment and sensors throughout the marsh and performs regular data downloads and analyses along with semi-annual water and soil quality sampling. EcoKai staff has also provided nesting bird surveying and monitoring during vegetation maintenance of the associated Riparian Corridor. The marsh was designed to provide wildlife habitat, water quality enhancement, and flood control services. Long-term maintenance activities include weeding, irrigation, emergent vegetation management for vector control, trail maintenance, water quality monitoring, vegetation and bird monitoring, data analysis, and public education. The project regularly exceeds performance goals, which include bird diversity and cover by native vegetation. The continued success of this ecosystem is remarkable given the project’s location in a highly urbanized watershed.
