Nesting Bird Monitoring, Playa Vista - California
Date: October 2012
By: Jim Burton, PE

EcoKai staff worked with the property owner and vegetation clearing crews to monitor nesting bird activities in the Riparian Corridor and Freshwater Marsh in the Ballona Wetlands, Playa Vista, California. The purpose was to identify nests that could be potentially affected by clearing and thinning of emergent vegetation as required for mosquito abatement. Monitoring consisted of pre-clearing surveys for bird nests prior to vegetation clearing activities, and if potential nest sites were found, suitable buffer zones were established around the site to protect the birds from potential disturbance. Crews were instructed to avoid these areas EcoKai staff directed and monitored clearing personnel to ensure they remain outside of the buffer zones. The property owner and the Los Angeles West Vector Control District set priorities in terms of which areas required vegetation clearing and EcoKai staff worked closely with representatives of both to ensure nesting birds were not disturbed.
