South Los Angeles Wetland Project, Los Angeles - California
Date: January, 2012
By: Jim Burton, PE

EcoKai staff worked closely with the designer and construction contractor to oversee the installation of the plants for the creation of an urban wetland in the City of Los Angeles (City). EcoKai’s scope began with an initial site survey of plant species previously installed and locations were plotted on CADD drawings for review by project personnel.

Selected regional nurseries were contacted to determine plant availability and to develop a list of available plants based on size, species, number of plants, and cost. A plant photo identification log was prepared showing photographs of representative plants available at each nursery. The log identified the species name, number of plants available, plant container size, and the habitat in which to be planted.

EcoKai determined the number of plants required to fulfill the City’s desired density and added those plants to the original design palette including “upland” species that were suitable for the higher elevation wetland habitats. Plant spacing and densities were calculated by habitat area for each wetland cell.

Finally, the contractor’s irrigation schedule was reviewed and EcoKai staff developed recommendations and direction regarding watering practices and the as-built grading conditions were documented.

This project was completed within the allocated budget and schedule provided by the City.
